How Nova-Tech Engineering achieves world-class precision with Mastercam and ProtoTek.
Nova-Tech Engineering began with a single mission: automate a meaningful challenge in the agricultural industry. That first breakthrough grew into something much larger, becoming a globally recognized and highly diversified manufacturer operating out of the MinnWest Technology Campus in central Minnesota. As their machining capabilities evolved from simple operations to full 5-axis and mill-turn work, one partnership became central to sustaining that growth.

From Agricultural Roots to Global Manufacturer
In 1985, Nova-Tech’s founders set out to bring automation to the agricultural sector. Seven years later, Nova-Tech Engineering was formally established, and the principles that drove that original breakthrough have guided the company ever since, including continuous improvement, practical problem solving, and partnerships built to last.
Today, Nova-Tech operates across multiple buildings on the MinnWest Technology Campus, a complex they have restored, expanded, and developed into a growth-oriented manufacturing performance center. Their capabilities range from proprietary patented agricultural solutions to custom precision machining across diverse industries, serving customers from prototype to high-volume production all under one roof.
Software That Had to Keep Up
As Nova-Tech’s customer base grew more demanding, so did the complexity of the parts on their shop floor. Tighter tolerances, more sophisticated geometries, and compressed timelines meant their CAM software capabilities had to be comprehensive.
When they evaluated their options, the choice became clear.
With Mastercam, Nova-Tech consolidated programming across their full range of operations, including3D contouring, Mill-turn, and full 5-axis, on a single platform. Programming accuracy improved, workflows became more efficient, and the team gained the confidence to take on increasingly complex work without sacrificing quality or lead times.
"I used other CAM solutions for a little while, and when I got to Mastercam, it was far superior. I think all the other solutions out there are good at one thing, and Mastercam is good at a lot of things."
A 30-Year Partnership with ProtoTek
Mastercam’s impact at Nova-Tech is not just about the software, it is about the people behind it. ProtoTek, a long-time Mastercam Channel Partner in the upper Midwest, has been alongside Nova-Tech for three decades, training their team and solving problems at every stage of growth.
“Our relationship with ProtoTek has been fantastic. They really worked alongside us. When we first started 30 years ago, it was a simpler product, but as things advanced, we needed 3D contouring, we needed Mill-Turn, we needed full 5-axis — and ProtoTek helped us through all of those processes and trained our team to be better.”
That responsiveness extends to day-to-day support as well. Whether it is a complex file that stumps the team in-house or a licensing issue that threatens production, ProtoTek delivers fast, practical solutions.
"The training they do at ProtoTek is top-notch. The guys are always willing to help if you have questions. They're very responsive.Anything you send them that you can't figure out, they're getting it back to you in a very short time. One day we had a licensing issue, and they knew we couldn't be down, so they were on the phone in a second."
The Impact
With Mastercam and ProtoTek, Nova-Tech Engineering has built a programming and support infrastructure that scales with their ambitions. Their team moves fluidly between complex job types, delivering precision results whether the order is a single prototype or tens of thousands of parts. That reliability is a competitive differentiator, and it directly shapes how Nova-Tech is perceived by the global customers they serve.
Looking Ahead
Innovation and technology remain at the forefront of Nova-Tech’s business model. With proprietary patented inventions, world-class custom machining, and a performance center built for growth, they are positioned to meet whatever complexity comes next. Mastercam and ProtoTek will be part of that journey as they have been for three decades.
