Collective Intelligence: An Insight into the Power of Collaboration

Over the past few weeks, we had the privilege of hosting 14 Sandvik brands at our headquarters in Tolland, Connecticut for a Collective Intelligence event. For several days, we collaborated on current projects, shared product roadmaps, product demonstrations, best practices, and identified areas of opportunity. We also made time for Swedish fika, of course.

Want more information on how the week went? Keep reading.

Product Connectivity Across Sandvik Brands

The Collective Intelligence event was designed to draw on a combination of data, technology, and diverse human skills to address different aspects of success in the manufacturing industry.

All 14 participating brands were encouraged to collaborate and give insight into personal business experiences and harness this “Collective Intelligence” and the many benefits it offers.

Participants included selected individuals across Sandvik Manufacturing and Machining Solutions who actively work with their product’s roadmap and have the leverage to start new projects and collaborations. During the event, tech leaders discussed architecture, user experience, tech capability enablers like Open APIs and aligned roadmaps – all to empower the vision towards closed loop manufacturing.

Attendees benefitted from meeting someone outside their team who plays a role in product development and has commonalities about a specific manufacturing area but approach this topic from a different angle. The participating brands were:

  • Mastercam
  • Cambrio
  • SigmaNEST
  • Cimatron
  • GibbsCAM
  • CRIBWISE
  • Comara
  • TDM Systems
  • Metrologic Group
  • Sandvik Coromant
  • Walter
  • SECO Tools
  • CGTech
  • ICAM

While all three days of the event were filled with informative presentations and demos from the above brands, we’ve selected a few to highlight for our Mastercam users.

Partnering to Create Endless Possibilities with Tool Data Integrations

On the first day of meetings, Mastercam’s CPO, David Boucher, and CTO, T.J. Boberek, presented to the group “Evolution of the Mastercam Toolpath Platform” to highlight Mastercam’s visions for the future of manufacturing technology, as well as collaborations with Sandvik’s Design, Planning & Automation team.

The presentation was a great peek into the future of Mastercam and Sandvik’s relationship, which recently celebrated its one-year anniversary. Mastercam’s tool data integrations with Sandvik will only enhance our users’ experience within Mastercam in the future.

The Lighthouse Effect: Innovation and Collaboration at Work

A highlight from the final day of meetings included the presentation “Lighthouse Factories: The Center of Innovation and Collaboration” by Danielle Dahl, Program Lead Specialist for Sandvik Manufacturing Solutions.

Sandvik’s Lighthouse Factory program was designed to address modern challenges throughout manufacturing: improving efficiency, enhancing quality, and reducing waste for customers.

In order to be part of the program, smart factories must be committed to digitizing their shop floor with Sandvik solutions. These companies provide continuous feedback to drive the development of end-to-end solutions. With the help of this program, collaboration amongst Sandvik brands will only be strengthened.

“Sandvik’s digital solutions linked to smart factories have great potential to change manufacturing.  Our ambition is to improve customer productivity and creativity by tapping into the wealth of knowledge about our processes, products, and customers”, says Magnus Malmström, CTO for Sandvik Manufacturing Solutions, who lead the Collective Intelligence event.

What’s Next?

Looking back on this event, we’re excited about the open dialogue we have established with other industry leaders and hope that going forward, fellow Sandvik brands will reach out to each other for support and solutions to common challenges.

At Mastercam, we aim to keep this level of collaboration going and will keep you updated as we hope to host additional Collective Intelligence events in the future.
