Mastercam Deburr: Unlocking Precision with Asymmetric Edge Setting

When it comes to precision machining, deburring is more than just a finishing touch—it’s a critical step in ensuring part quality, safety, and performance. Moreover, with Mastercam Deburr, users already benefit from automated edge finishing directly within their toolpaths. However, for complex geometries, there’s a powerful feature that takes this even further: Asymmetric Edge Setting.

Available in the Tool Contact section of the Mastercam Deburr toolpath, the Allow Asymmetric Edge Shape option gives users the flexibility to handle intricate edge conditions with greater accuracy and consistency.

What Is the Asymmetric Edge Setting in Mastercam Deburr?

The Asymmetric Edge Setting allows Mastercam to vary the edge break requirements slightly when the geometry is too complex for a uniform chamfer or edge shape. As a result, the toolpath doesn’t get trimmed or interrupted in tight or irregular areas. Consequently, this leads to a more continuous and complete deburring process.

Why Use Asymmetric Edge Shape?
  • Improves toolpath continuity in complex areas
  • Maintains edge integrity without sacrificing precision
  • Reduces manual finishing by automating more of the process
  • Enhances part quality with consistent edge breaks
How It Works

In the Show Me video available to Mastercam CONNECT users on myMastercam.com, the feature is demonstrated in action:

  1. Enable Asymmetric Edge Shape: Found under the Tool Axis Control page, this setting gives Mastercam permission to adjust the edge shape dynamically.
  1. Handle Complex Geometry: When standard edge shapes can’t be applied due to tight corners or intricate features, Mastercam intelligently adapts the toolpath.
  1. Achieve Continuous Deburring: Ultimately, the result is a smoother, more consistent finish across the entire part—even in areas where traditional deburring would fail.
Real-World Impact

Whether you’re machining aerospace components, medical devices, or high-precision tooling, the Asymmetric Edge Setting in Mastercam Deburr helps you:

  • Save time by reducing manual post-processing
  • Improve part consistency across batches
