San Diego CAD CAM, Inc. is not only a highly successful CAM software Reseller in the San Diego area, it is also a woman-owned business. The company’s name may differ from when it was founded as Davis Technologies in 1995, but it has always been a Mastercam support representative. San Diego CAD CAM services California’s San Diego and Imperial counties, Baja California, Hawaii, and Guam.
In the following Q&A, Julie Davis, San Diego CAD CAM owner, shares how she and technical support specialist, Trevor Bailey, have built the business. She describes how their dedication to Mastercam users has helped build a strong business network and many friendships along the way.
What Mastercam services do you offer customers?
We are big on training and do a lot of technical support and any kind of service involved with the software. We’ve always been very strong with our training, ever since the beginning in 1995. That’s always been important to the business. We have a large training room and about seven different classes that we offer. These cater to users at different levels of proficiency, starting with a Mill Essentials class and going through to Multiaxis. Trevor Bailey is our instructor, aside from his other technical support responsibilities. We usually have one or two classes a month, and the classes can be up to 12 hours long.
Other than training, just about anything that the customer needs along the lines of technical help we can do. On occasion, we’ve gone above and beyond for customer support. Sometimes we’ve had customers go through a difficult spot, and we’re right there to help them get through it. We like our customers a lot. Many of them have become friends over the years. When you are in business with the same people for many years, you do really build a relationship, a friendship with them. There’s trust there, and I think that’s really important.
What’s the latest or most exciting customer application you have?
We had a customer who was struggling with his 5-axis milling. He just wasn’t confident with what he was doing. We came in and helped him with the programming. The project was to create a wheel on a car that was setting a land speed record on the salt flats of Utah. It had to be able to withstand great heat, friction, and speed. We helped him set that up and made sure he could tackle future problems, too.
What’s your favorite feature in Mastercam?
Trevor, our technical support and training specialist, likes Mastercam’s suite of 5-axis toolpaths. They are very flexible in relation to many different programming styles and machine types. The graphical interface is very user friendly and easy to understand. Combined with the ability to output 3-, 4-, and 5-axis code with them, that makes it extremely flexible with all part types and machining needs.
What are you looking forward to?
Having sold Mastercam for over 20 years, I’ve seen it go from a lot of 2D parts to 3D parts, and now everyone is in 5-axis. I’m interested in seeing what comes after 5-axis. It was rare when I first started selling; only one or two customers even understood what it was. Now it’s common.
What are some challenges/opportunities you find that are unique to your region?
Our region is unique in that we are very strong in the medical field. San Diego has a lot of big pharmaceutical companies that are doing research, and they all use Mastercam. We have that innovative research going on here, even some cutting-edge spinal research, and I think that is something that really sets San Diego apart.
What are some unique issues that you can solve as a local support hub for Mastercam?
I think that being local is incredibly important. That’s one of my top selling features. Companies out there that might use other software often switch over when I explain that we’re local, and we’re here to help. They don’t have to wade through internet searches to answer a question. They can just call us.
When it comes to training, being local is huge. It’s one-on-one where you can actually talk with your instructor and get that sincere personal touch. I’ve had a lot of feedback from customers on that issue, and they love it.
Do you sell any other products besides Mastercam?
We sell CIMCO, which works with Mastercam.
