Getting in Gear with Stony Brook University

Mastercam sponsors SAE International student design competitions by providing free software and educational support to participating teams. Chris Sherling is President of Stony Brook Motorsports at the State University of New York at Stony Brook. He reached out to give us some information about the team and their recent participation in Baja SAE competition.

Chris shared that nineteen students competed at Baja SAE Rochester 2019. The team used Mastercam to create front and rear hubs, front and rear uprights, lateral link ends, trailing arm ends, tie rod ends, gearbox case, steering rack clevises, lateral link mounting clevises, front and rear brake caliper mounts, CVT backplate, and gears.

He talked about the benefits of using Mastercam, saying, “We’ve used Mastercam for years and have grown comfortable in using it. The software has allowed us to produce great parts on our Haas TM1 CNC Mill, and to reduce machine time on parts. This is incredibly useful as we run at least 40 parts on our machine with a lot of them with multiple operations.”

You can follow the progress of Stony Brook Motorsports on Instagram and Facebook. Thanks to Chris for reaching out, and best of luck to the team in the future.
