Getting in Gear with Kettering University

Mastercam sponsors SAE International student design competitions by providing free software and educational support to participating teams. Tucker LyVere is the team leader and head machinist for Kettering Baja at Kettering University in Flint, Michigan. He reached out to give us some information about the team and their recent participation in Baja SAE competition.

Tucker shared that about thirty students participated in the past season. They competed at Midnight Mayhem (11th place), MTU Winter Baja (3rd place), and Baja SAE California (21st overall).

The team benefitted from the ability to create toolpaths to manufacture components using Mastercam. They used Mastercam for a manual gearbox, brake calipers, and hubs, in addition to some other items for their vehicle. Tucker also used Mastercam University a little bit getting started to help him learn some new things.

According to Tucker, “Mastercam has so many options to make it possible to machine how you want/need and to do it efficiently. It made programming way better.”

You can follow the progress of Kettering Baja on Instagram, YouTube, and Facebook. Thanks to Tucker for reaching out, and best of luck to the team in the future.

As part of our commitment to the future of manufacturing, Mastercam supports many educational initiatives and competitions to encourage student interest in technical disciplines.
