Beyond CAM—Reverse Engineering, MDB, and Dimensional Metrology

There are many ways Mastercam and our partners are harnessing integrated data technology to improve manufacturing performance and profitability. Here we take a look at reverse engineering, model-based definition (MBD), and dimensional metrology.

Reverse engineering tools within Verisurf dimensional measurement software use Push-Pull technology to streamline and transform data captured by a portable arm-type coordinate measuring machine (CMM) into a digital model. MBD and product manufacturing information, including Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T), are appended to the model to document the design intent and to define final inspection requirements.

MBD data travels with the model to communicate the design intent for the part and the required level of accuracy to the part programmer, the machinist, and the inspector. It allows the project to be entirely paperless so that everyone, at every stage of the project, has access to the data they need.

Dimensional metrology software is used to perform first-piece inspection as well as create complete, automated CMM programs for capturing, analyzing, and reporting production inspection data in industry standard formats. Verisurf software does this within Mastercam’s familiar, CAD/CAM operating and programming environment. First article inspection is accomplished using the software’s rapid first-piece inspection capability that combines universal device support, model-based definition, real-time analysis, and AS9102 reporting into a single application.

First article inspection yields an inspection plan that can be used as a comprehensive starting point for creating CMM programs for aligning and checking production parts. In process inspections can be performed in the shop, on-machine with spindle probes using Mastercam’s Productivity+ software or with a portable arm-type measurement system.
