Westcoast Performance could be called a manufacturer of "fun stuff." The Anaheim, California company machines high-performance 400 c.i. push-rod V-8 engine blocks for Ford® Special Vehicle Operations and Nissan®'s Infiniti 4.0 liter engine block for their Indy Racing League entries. They also machine intake manifolds and water pumps for Chrysler® Marine, chassis for a variety of inline skates for Mission Roller Hockey®, and all the exhaust systems and most of the intake grates for Bombardier's Sea-Doo® personal watercraft.

The Challenge

Westcoast Performance needed a new manual trim system for use on the Sea-Doo personal watercraft. They wanted to find an easy to use software package to help them.

Project Details

Westcoast Performance has grown in the past three years from 55 to over 160 employees and generates tens of millions of dollars in annual sales from its 44,000 square foot facility in Anaheim. It began in 1978 when Bob Zantos, Westcoast's owner, converted his small home garage into a part-time business/hobby he called RDZ Engineering. Soon, RDZ was making Jet-Ski® parts in the little garage. Now, the company's reputation for high quality, high performance parts has lead to relationships with several manufacturing entities, including Bombardier. Mastercam arrived at Westcoast Performance just a few years ago, when the CNC supervisor recommended the CAD/CAM software. Since then, it has become a mainstay of machining toolpath creation and now has been extended to support Westcoast's major venture into in-house parts casting.

When Westcoast Performance decided they needed new manual trim systems for use on the Sea-Doo personal watercraft, they handed the task of machining the molds to their CNC programming department. The wireframe and surface files were designed in Pro-E and brought into Mastercam through IGES format. Westcoast's CNC programming department has used several of the programs on the market and Mastercam is their favorite. In their experiences with Mastercam, Westcoast's CNC programmers have found a real ease-of-use that is lacking in some competing products.
