Using Mastercam is easy. Making rotary cutters efficiently for the bakery business, in the highly competitive global market, is hard. Moline Machinery of Duluth Minnesota is a world leader in the manufacturing of fryer systems, rotary cutters, make-up lines and sheeting technology. Moline's roll cutters are designed and built to produce delicious products for every consumer taste - from donuts and exotically shaped cookies, to pizza and croissants. And always, Moline, with a dedication to quality in the details of shape, pattern layout, trim ratio and overall fabrication, produced the finest cutters in the world. As good as they have been for over 55 years, Moline knew that they had to get smart and become more technically efficient as new competitors, especially those in Europe, flexed their muscles.

Enter Corky Brown - an engineering/manufacturing genius -- who has machined and assembled by hand just about every conceivable roll cutter as demanded by the biggest bakers in the world. "I knew I had to get into software to improve flexibility and speed, and I didn't have a clue", says Corky. IMTS became his software laboratory. So undaunted, Corky led a group of engineers to the big show to learn about CAM software and determine which was best for their manufacturing needs.

After reviewing the offerings of every software supplier, they found that two issues pointed to a clear advantage for Mastercam. They liked the idea of working in 2D. Mastercam had plenty of easy features for 2D machining. The user-defined Work Coordinate System would allow Moline to orient view, construction and tool planes of a cutter without having to move it in 3D space. The new planes and origins were then easily transferred to G-code.

The other exclusive feature from Mastercam was 4-axis Roll Die programming that delivered easy programming to special job roll dies. This was particularly important because they were so involved in specials. They also found that with full associativity they could capture the knowledge of previously programmed parts, which would be invaluable to their specialty cutter business. It was a huge competitive plus.
