2008 IOF Contest Winners

Vincennes Instructor, Doug Bowman and IOF 2008 Winner, Bernie Sievers pose for photos during their April 2008 tour of the Boyd Coddington Hot Rods shop. Left to right: Instructor Doug Bowman; IOF 2008 Winner, Bernie Sievers; Jo Coddington; Kevin Christenson of Boyd Coddington Hot Rods

First Place
Bernie Sievers
Advanced Manufacturing Program, Vincennes University
Sievers’ Bonneville 300 mph Club steering stood out as interesting and fresh. The small holes along the bottom and top really added to the sleek racing style of this wheel.

2008 Runner-up
Kenyon Burrell
Eastern Arizona College
Burrell’s design combined tradition with a kick and fit perfectly with the Boyd Coddington Hot Rods style.

2008 Honorable Mention
Alex Beranek and Jordan Hinkson
Kenmore Middle School
Beranek and Hinkson’s steering wheel was styled after the biohazard symbol. Coddington admired the enthusiasm these boys showed by entering a competition typically dominated by college students.

2008 Winning Instructor

Doug Bowman
Associate Professor and Lead Instructor for the Advanced Manufacturing Program
Machine Trades Technology Department
Vincennes University
Vincennes, Indiana

Vincennes instituted their innovative 3-year Advanced Manufacturing Program in 2005 after conducting a survey of local manufacturers who unanimously agreed that there was a crying need for technical school graduates with advanced CAD/CAM and CNC skills. Doug has used the Mastercam IOF competition as part of his curriculum since the contest was instituted. "The parts are very realistic. Our students benefit from doing something very similar to what they're going to do when they graduate." says Doug. "Our graduates are getting easily two or three job offers from high-tech manufacturing shops with some of the most prestigious names in automotive, aerospace, and medical device manufacturing." We commend Doug on his excellence in teaching and thank him for his dedication to Mastercam.

2008 Celebrity Judge

Boyd Coddington, known by many from the popular TLC show American Hot Rod, grew up in a time and place where everyone was expected to pull their own weight, and when something broke around the place, you fixed what you had or fabricated your own. In his home garage in Cypress, California, in the late Sixties, Boyd set a standard for workmanship, creativity, and thinking from which he has never deviated. He will be missed.
